“You are just the ugliest, Gosh!”
Feel that? The supposedly misunderstood side of us that controls our very perspective of everything.
One of the joys of our salvation is that you get to literally experience change in totality. What you used to be suddenly becomes what you despise the most. Your Fits, low self-esteem, bad attitudes; everything wrong about you would gradually become icky on the inside. This is a definite reality that all true believers experience; a change of heart – One tangible proof of the work Jesus came to accomplish. However, our minds still need to be enlightened on who’s who and what’s what.
How do you react when people belittle you? I know I hate that, or what do you feel when somebody calls you ugly or fat or unlucky? Who are you on default?
We all carry a lot of yokes that need to be dropped, and most of them are unknown to us because as far as we are concerned that’s just who we are. I never knew how envious of others I was, even a few years after I was born again. The thought of someone being better (in any way) made me very bitter. I just reacted in that way with no understanding whatsoever. Now fast forward to this moment (four years after being saved); that desire to envy still comes up once in a while but it doesn’t push me to actually envy. I can hear about how beautiful or smarter someone else is and decide at that very moment not yield to the desire to be envious. I know my default mode, so I’m working against.
“But that’s just who I am, I can’t help it if I have a really bad temper” No. Understand your default mode and work against it. That understanding helps you recognize that part of you that needs to be crucified; our old nature needs to be put off. (Colossians 3:5-14)
So let’s practice this again.
“You are just the ugliest, Gosh!”
“You are just a failure”
RECOGNIZE WHAT’S ON DEFAULT.
STAND AGAINST IT WITH THE TRUTH.
Regardless of how pushy that emotion can be, conquer it with Truth.
“That’s not me”
“I don’t have to be angry or jealous or filled with hate”
“I have God and He has made me a new creation”
The less you feed it, the less impact it has on you and do you know what’s being done here – You are building your lives on the Truth and Crucifying the flesh.
5 Away then with sinful, earthly things; deaden the evil desires lurking within you; have nothing to do with sexual sin, impurity, lust, and shameful desires; don’t worship the good things of life, for that is idolatry.
6 God’s terrible anger is upon those who do such things.
7 You used to do them when your life was still part of this world;
8 but now is the time to cast off and throw away all these rotten garments of anger, hatred, cursing, and dirty language.
9 Don’t tell lies to each other; it was your old life with all its wickedness that did that sort of thing; now it is dead and gone.
10 You are living a brand new kind of life that is continually learning more and more of what is right, and trying constantly to be more and more like Christ who created this new life within you.
11 In this new life one’s nationality or race or education or social position is unimportant; such things mean nothing. Whether a person has Christ is what matters, and he is equally available to all.
12 Since you have been chosen by God who has given you this new kind of life, and because of his deep love and concern for you, you should practice tenderhearted mercy and kindness to others. Don’t worry about making a good impression on them, but be ready to suffer quietly and patiently.
13 Be gentle and ready to forgive; never hold grudges. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others
